After being named and shamed as residents of Europe’s “fattest city”, people in Birmingham are being offered free weight-management courses to help them shape up and lose weight during 2011.

The Size Down campaign is run by the nutrition and dietetics team of Birmingham Community Health NHS Trust, and is open to adults registered with GPs in selected areas across the city.

Courses are taking place at venues across the city, consisting of 12 weekly sessions, each lasting 90 minutes.  They start at Sparkhill Social and Cultural Centre on Monday, 10 January.

The Trust’s public health nutrition lead Eleanor Mcgee said:  “Size Down helps people to lose weight and keep it off.

“It is very different to other weight-management groups because our professional food health advisors help clients to lose weight and to keep it off by making small, long-term lifestyle changes. Nine out of 10 people who complete the course lose weight.

“Feedback from people completing the course confirms that Size Down is really helping them to make changes to their eating habits.”

The supportive and friendly sessions provide advice on healthy eating and exercise, as well as tips on reading and understanding food labels, and how to avoid snacking.

Details of the courses are as follows:

  • Sparkhill Social and Cultural Centre – Monday, 10 January 10am-11.30am
  • Erdington Library– Tuesday, 11 January 12 noon-1.30pm
  • Stechford Cascades– Wednesday, 12 January 1pm-2.30pm
  • Summerfield Primary Care Centre– Wednesday, 12 January 1.30pm-3.00pm
  • Saltley Leisure Centre– Thursday, 13 January 10am-11.30am
