National Glaucoma Awareness Weekhttp://nhslocal.nhs.uk/my-health/equip/events/detail/4751Start date: 11 June 2012
End date: 17 June 2012
It is estimated that in the UK half of those with glaucoma are unaware of their condition or of the risk to their sight, livelihoods and quality of life yet glaucoma is treatable and the likelihood of going blind from the condition is very small if it is caught early - early detection is the key. During National Glaucoma Awareness Week, the International Glaucoma Association (IGA) is urging everyone over the age of forty to have an ordinary routine sight test that includes all three glaucoma tests so that if glaucoma is present, it can be detected and treated early. Posters and leaflets are available to order free of charge to help us raise awareness of glaucoma around your local area. More information is available on the IGA website. Acute Medicine Awareness Dayhttp://nhslocal.nhs.uk/my-health/equip/events/detail/9860Start date: 20 June 2012
End date: 20 June 2012
Most hospitals in the UK have an Acute Medical Unit (AMU), providing high quality, multi-professional care for patients admitted to hospital as emergencies. Those of us who work in the speciality can see the benefits which the AMU and its hardworking staff can provide to patients on a daily basis. However beyond our walls, there is often a poor understanding of the concept of acute medicine. The Society wants to raise awareness of our specialty, so that, in the future the term ‘acute medicine’ will be as familiar to patients and NHS staff as any other aspect of hospital care. In addition to raising awareness of the speciality we believe this will be a great opportunity for AMUs to raise charity funds for the unit, which can be used for equipment, training and other educational activities. We would like as many units as possible to get involved, in order to try to spread the ‘acute medicine message’ to all parts of the UK.

Human Rights Dayhttp://nhslocal.nhs.uk/my-health/equip/events/detail/4685Start date: 10 December 2012
End date: 10 December 2012

Raising awareness events across the UK. The fundamental value of human protection and justice celebrated on Human Rights Day is at the core of our work with refugees.  So we are calling on our friends to champion Human Rights Day with us by hosting a RefuTEA on Friday 10th December. We are asking you to mobilise your local community, family and friends to raise awareness that people seeking asylum in the UK have the right to be treated with respect and humanity; and you will be raising vital funds for our work with asylum seekers and refugees. RefuTEA hosts during Refugee Week had lots of fun whilst raising thousands of pounds from their RefuTEA Parties.  Please join them and stand up for the human rights of refugees on Human Rights Day. You can get more information on hosting a RefuTEA on our website. Order a RefuTEA host pack or drop us a line or call us on 020 7346 1203 if you have any questions.  http://www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/supportourwork/fundraise_for_us/refutea_parties.htm?dm_i=I6P,A4CW,31JKEL,RI9G,1
